Motorola Droid - The Beast Is Among Us!

(Note: Tips, Tricks, Help, and Accessories is toward the bottom of this post)
Today could be an historical event day for Verizon Wireless as they are betting huge on the new Motorola Droid. A lot of stores open at 6:00AM to start the sales event. One store I was at sold over 100 units by the first 1/2 of the day. Pretty impressive.

I've used many phones in the past. I've gone from Windows Mobile devices to Blackberry devices to now using Android 2.0, the new Google OS for mobile devices. I've also play with the iPhone OS a few times in between those devices as well. My initial impression of the Motorola Droid was...I GOTTA HAVE IT!

While I was at the Verizon Wireless store, I spent an hour hogging their demo version and was so impressed I bought one to use myself.

Main Features
The Motorola Droid comes with Google's Android 2.0. It is tout the first Google's Android 2.0 device in the market at the time of release. Out of the box, it comes with a nice generous 16GB MicroSD card for you to store all the nice downloads you will be getting off Google's Apps store. On the back, you will find a decent 5MP Camera with LED flash. Pop this sucker open and you will be surprised by the hidden full QWERTY physical keyboard. Given the size and weight (not much more than Apple's iPhone), it comes with a real keyboard.

Display
The DROID has a 3.7 inch capacitive touchscreen. The exact same heat sensing touch screen used by Blackberry Storm and Apple iPhone. The screen support WVGA resolution clocking in at 480 x 854 resolution.

The Guts
Inside the DROID, it is powered by a 600Mhz OMAP3430 processor. It is the same CPU found inside both the iPhone 3Gs and Palm Pre. To support the processor, it comes with 256MB RAM and 512MB ROM. The battery is a 1400mah power that support up to 6.5hrs of talk time. The OS is Google's newest Android 2.0.All of those all sitting on Verizon Wireless 3G wireless service. It support EVDO Rev A! and if you are around a free wifi area, this phone has WIFI capability to use it.

The Glory
What's more to say there. Same power as iPhone on a larger screen, better camera, and most importantly on Verizon Wireless 3G service. Woot! Finally a phone worthy to compete with Apple's iPhone!

What's Good:
  • Google Map w/ Turn by Turn Navigation FREE
  • Fast browsing and responses
  • Touch capability is comparable with Apple iPhone
  • The size and weight, with the physical keyboard outstanding.
  • Large 3.7" bright colorful LCD
  • Solid built with metal casing
  • 5MP Camera with LED Flash
  • Comes standard with 16GB MicroSD
  • WIFI
  • Youtube Support
  • Bluetooh w/ A2DP Support
What's Bad:
  • Lack of multi-touch
  • Camera image stability feature. (The Blackberry Storm has it!)
  • No physical Send and End button
  • Camera a bit buggy (could be fixed using software update?)
  • Limited support for Lotus Notes Sync
  • DPAD waste of space (would be nice to have finger print reader for security purpose)
  • Lack of multimedia support. No video file player.

What's Other Are Saying About DROID:
  • Product Review - http://www.product-reviews.net/2009/10/21/motorola-droid-phone-review-google-android-20/
- The phone will not hurt iPhone 3GS sales, but Apple will now be looking over its shoulder, wondering what the second generation of this phone will be like.
  • Engadget - http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/28/motorola-droid-first-hands-on/
- That big screen is killer. Bright, crisp, and tons of room for your icons and widgets.

  •  Boy Genius Report - http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/10/23/motorola-droid-preview/
 - We love the build quality of this phone.
- It’s the largest capacitive screen we’ve ever seen and it’s positively amazing. It’s crisp, sharp, vibrant, bright, and really, really responsive. It’s almost iPhone-level in terms of the capacitive touch.
- once you move past the initial “wow” factor, the Droid really delivers.

"We do not recommend using a screen protector on the DROID because it does impact the touch sensitivity. In fact, Verizon agreed with that so you must have run into an agent who missed that memo. The glass on the DROID is pretty durable. I would return the screen protector." -- Motorola Forums Manager

Cool Must Have Apps
How to download apps androlib is to go to Android Market Place, download Barcode Scanner. Once you have that, on all apps off androlibs, turn on bar code scanner, scan the bar code on your computer screen and it will takes you directly to downloading the apps!!

  1. Create a folder on the microSD card and name it "notifications" - small caps. Use an SD card reader to do this from your PC. (Not required)
  1. Copy any compatible audio file you want to set as a message notification to that folder.
  2. Insert the SD card back into your phone.
  1. Go to Messaging and press the menu key.
  1. Touch Settings
  1. Touch Select ringtone.
You should be able to locate your audio files there and set them.

  • How To Set MP3 as Alarm Tone
First you need to mount your phone via USB Mount. Place the MP3 or M4A file in the directory media/audio/alarms. If that doesn't exist yet, create one. Disconnect phone, reboot phone, now go to your alarm and look at the ring tone available. Your MP3 / M4A file will now be available to select as ringtone for alarm.
